Curiosities

BARRIL ÂNCORA

Have you ever heard of the ANCHOR BARRIL? It is located on Lopes Mendes beach, one of the most beautiful and visited on the island. They say he has been in the region for at least 300 years. It is still a mystery how he arrived in Lopes Mendes.

SINCE 1502

Discovered in 1502, the Island was once a hideout for adventurers and PIRATES. They hid in the forest looking for water, wood and food. On beaches like Aventureiro, Lopes Mendes and Provetá there are also marks of Indians, other inhabitants of Ilha Grande, centuries ago.

THE PRISION

The Ilha Grande prison, which has been deactivated since 1994, had as a backdrop some political prisons, such as that of the author GRACILIANO RAMOS. There he wrote “Memories of Jail”. Today, the site houses a study center at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
